The one and only onesie craze has finally hit South Africa! Not everyone is quite fond of this babygro phenomenon just yet, but it sure is growing. Oh you have no idea what I’m talking about? Lol. Where have you been? With one in eight people in the UK owning the all-in-one romper suit, the onesie has taken countries such as Europe, North America and Australia by storm.
The onesie has not only crept its why into our fashion sense, but also the daywear cupboards of celebrities Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Miley Cirus, Brad Pit, Jennifer Elliston, Kate Moss, Cheryl Cole, Wycleff Jean, Ryan Gosling, Cara Delevingne and even Robbie Williams.

Would I wear it? Helllz yeah! It’s comfortable, trendy, warm for winter and a total eye catcher! I can just picture myself stomping in the dust at the next outdoor with the Selk’bag® and take a nap next to the dancefloor like bestie Viv and I always do! Or parading Newlands with my dadio in the springbok aFREAKa – Ons vir jou Suid Africa! You actually get pretty decent high-fashion and sportswear onesies as well. I’ll totally rock the OnePiece Marius with a pair of hightops and a New Era snapback.
SOOOO where do you get it and who the hell brought this trend to SA? We owe it all to Alex and the okes from the multi-channel, experiential marketing platform, One UP South Africa. One UP launched with their onesie focus in February 2013, making waves as a lifestyle hub for everything onesie in this country. They currently represent over 100 onesie styles in South Africa on their website and will be organising the first dedicated onesie party this coming May in Cape Town alongside Red Stag. How rad it that!?!
If you visit the Onesie website, you will see a vast variety of brands including collaborations with crazy animal onesie brand aFREAKa, luxury loungewear brand La Ninna Nanna, ethical onesie brand INYE and the original, most popular onesie brand, OnePiece of Norway.
Here is a mini snapshot from the variety of onesies available from the above-mentioned brands.

All the onesies are between 400 and 3000 bokke – depending on the brand. For a bigger variety I encourage you to visit their website here and Facebook page here. You can also follow them on Twitter here.
What is even more impressive is that One UP South Africa also giving back by raising awareness about local issues through their Give One Back initiative. They are working with five organizations, including Project Rhino KZN, and are donating a percentage of their profits every month into bettering South Africa and the issues at hand. High-five guys!
I’m very excited to firstly get my hands on a One UP onesie and secondly see what other creative concepts, videos and fashion trends are up their sleeves – I suggest you follow the Facebook Page to keep up to date about the onesie party mentioned above as well as the crazy pics, collabs and videos. I read online that apparently a couple got married wearing onesies and another oke was buried in one while all his mourners at the funeral were wearing onesies as well! Hmmm for all we know the all-in-one fashion trend will end up on the stages of KKNK or the next music video for the Leeuloop next!
Whether you like patterns, prints, wild animals, luxury sleepwear or stylish sportswear – there is a onesie for you!
With love from Leo*
